Sherita Jean-Jacques
Who is Sherita you ask?
Why, she's the main character of my new series! She's a sexy, sassy, detective who also happens to be psychic.
I completed the first - very rough- draft last NaNoWriMo and did so by the seat of my pants, AKA "pantsing". The story itself was based on a dream I had. In the dream I worked in a detective agency. I did research on a case and came back to tell the owner what I found. Unfortunately, he didn't listen to me but he did however listen to a bimbo who worked in our office. The bimbo was nowhere near as good with research as me and barely did it. Yet, the owner took her word over mine. In the dream, I get really angry because this happens quite often. I then end up quitting and walk out of the office before the owner can react.
In the dream, I am me and the owner is a white dude who is that type of white man who is effortlessly - not necessarily maliciously - racist, misogynist, and homophobic. Just you're basic "anyone different than me is weird" type. Next part of the dream, it's the same day and I'm at my local bar for a few drinks. The old owner comes in looking for me. I'm secretly impressed because coming there - to a place and a neighborhood with so many black and brown people - must have been hard for him. Of course, I don't give him any props for this and just ask him what the hell he wants.
He explains that he was so standoffish to me and my ideas to protect me. He also hires me to find out who's trying to kill him or who's framing him for something. I can't remember exactly, but in any case I woke up with enough to think about a story. I decided to do that idea of NaNoWriMo because it would be the first time I wrote without an outline or any type of plan.
The writing itself was fun, especially since I was pantsing it and coming up with the plot as I wrote. Although I had my 2 main characters down, the villain took some time to flesh out. Also, one of the side characters ended up having 3-4 different names since I could never remember from day to day what I had decided. I finished the first draft on the last day and as you can imagine it was all over the place. That's what pantsing will get ya.
Since then, I have been working on an outline, character bios, and building up the bad guys. OOOOOH I really like the bad guys. I do a quick introduction of the bad guys in this first book and by the end of the series, my MC will have to fight them. Can't wait to see how that ends....
